Breed Description

The Neopolitan Mastiff is a remarkable heavy-boned breed that was originally bred by Romans to guard and defend their property. Presently, this affectionate breed is known to be a delightful family pet and skilled guard dog. This massive breed stands 24-30 inches tall, and weighs up to 165 pounds, some almost reaching 200 pounds.

Coat

The Neopolitan Mastiff has a short, smooth, dense and hard coat of the same length all over their body. They usually come in solid colors of black, gray, mahogany, tawny, and some with darker or lighter shades of these colors.

Activity

The energetic Neopolitan Mastiff requires regular exercise. This lively and spirited breed has to be walked a minimum of twice daily to stay healthy and fit. It is a great idea to provide this massive breed a large securely fenced yard.

Temperament

The fearless and very protective Neopolitan Mastiff prefers to be around their family at all times. This breed doesn't usually bark unless provoked. They have been known for sneaking up on intruders rather than alerting them first of their presence. ...

Due to the massive size of the Neopolitan Mastiff, it needs to be properly trained and socialized or else, they can be quite a handful. This breed is usually calm, never snappy. But, if once they set their minds on attacking, they can be difficult to be stopped. This breed is not suitable for beginners, and education should never be neglected even by those experienced owners.

Overview

Sometimes called Mastino or Neo, the Neopolitan Mastiff is among the gentle giant breeds. This muscular and massive breed is an intimidating guard dog, with a powerful body.

Care

Although the Neopolitan Mastiff does not require that much physical exercise, they would require a great space to live in. This giant breed should never be expected to force itself to fit into a small dwelling. This breed generally loves being outdoors, and will not do great in warm climates. As with all of the giant breeds, the Neopolitan Mastiff can be a handful to an obsessive house cleaner. This breed often makes a mess with food, and tends to drool.

Training

Neopolitan Mastiffs are highly intelligent breed inclined to think independently. This breed has to go through extensive early socialization to be able to accept strangers particularly within the household. Without proper training and socialization, they are more likely to become hostile towards unfamiliar dogs and strangers.

Forceful training methods will not work with this breed since it is challenging to physically dominate a massive dog. If a well-mannered Neopolitan Mastiff is what you are trying to achieve, prevent behavior issues before they actually happen through positive training methods starting at the earliest.

Character

Contrary to the ferocity of the Neopolitan Mastiff's appearance, this breed is an even-tempered, peaceful, affectionate and loving with its master, family and friends. This brave canine will surely endure any physical pain.
