Breed Description

The Norwegian Buhund is a lightly-built herding dog that belongs to the spitz family. This compact dog is a farm dog that originated in Norway. This well-balanced breed weighs between 26-40 pounds, and stands around 16-17 inches tall.

Coat

The Norwegian Buhund has a double coat that has a smooth but harsh top coat, and a thick, soft, and wooly inner coat. Commonly seen coat color is wheaten, that may range from light shades of cream, to orange or yellowish red. There can also be wolf sable or black coats that can be seen.

Activity

Being a working dog, the Norwegian Buhund requires a great deal of exercise. This affectionate breed is very loving of family, and will always be eager to cuddle or lick their owner. Children makes wonderful companion for this playful breed as they do great with children of all ages. However, strangers will always be ignored or even barked if perceived as threat. Ears should be cleaned regularly and nails be clipped short.

These dogs are known to bark if they want to send a message, and will therefore make great alarm dogs. This breed needs obedience training to ensure that they will be well-mannered as time goes by. As this breed has the inclination to be strong-minded, dog trainers should always be firm and consistent, yet gentle. They should be able to acquire the authority and the title of being the pack leader in this breed. As this breed loves to be around their family, the most effective punishment for bad behavior is ignoring them. As with the other entire breed of dogs, training should emphasize a lot of praise and positive reinforcement.
