As there are nearly 7 billion people on this earth there are also close to 7 billion different opinions on the best antiperspirant. There are a multitude of reasons why some people prefer brand X and others prefer brand Y.

Antiperspirant, which are officially classified as a DRUG by the FDA in the United States, have been around for over a century. In the late 19th century the first antiperspirant (often referred to as deodorant, later more on that) under the name of MUM. This brand can still be found in stores all over the world.

It is very important where the body odor actually comes from, because every single person on this earth sweats, but not everyone smells "bad" when doing it. The smell comes from the fact that sweat in certain areas of the body (mainly the armpit) is a great place for bacteria to live. The ferment under warm circumstances and the armpit is a part of the body that almost always has the same temperature. So there is the perfect breeding ground for the body odor as the actual fermenting is the smelly part.
So after you know what the problem is, you want to do something about it, ...
... but which way do you go?

As mentioned above, there is a definite difference between deodorants and antiperspirant. Not only is deodorant classed as a cosmetic and is antiperspirant officially a drug, but there is also a significant difference in the substances which it contains.

Deodorant is used to mask the smell of the "excessive sweating" by using alcohol. This actually increases sweating for a little bit, but it also, after this initial period, masks the smell of the body odor. We just mentioned excessive sweating, and we will continue to do so even if the actually sweating is not the cause of the problem. It is just the fact that people are calling it sweating and are always looking for ways to stop sweating, even though the body needs sweating to regulate the temperature.

Antiperspirant is normally not alcohol based and contains antiperspirant agents that will combat the actual fermenting circumstances that give the bacteria reason to live. This is normally done by including some aluminium compound. This will react with the electrolytes in the sweat and create a sort of gel layer in the glands itself. This should stop people from sweating.

If a person has a pretty normal amount of sweat producing glands it is generally common practice to use deodorant before going to work or on a date and it is often used directly after a shower. When a person has excessive sweating problems, whereby the glands produce a lot of sweat which is the perfect place for the fermentation, then a lot of options are left as you can use a deodorant to mask the smell, but you can also use the antiperspirant to try and stop the sweating. You will, however, not be able to use the antiperspirant as a solution for the excessive sweating as this is a medical problem for which medication or, sometimes, even an operation can be needed.

General sweating problems can be resolved by making sure you do not leave a safe heaven for bacteria in locations of heavy sweating like the armpit. It has been advised that people should never cut or shave their armpit hair as the hair works as a sponge and sucks up the sweat, which does not give the bacteria a chance to ferment the sweat. For esthetic reasons, many women do shave their armpits on a regular basis. If you, as a woman, have problems with excessive sweating, then you might want to try and not shave for a while, to see if this makes a difference.

All in all you should be weary of products that promise too much. You should be looking for an antiperspirant that works for you, and there are literally millions to choose from. Take your time in evaluating your choice as your body might go through different stages per year depending on things like diets. If you find your personal best antiperspirant you have done a good job and will smell nice and fresh to everyone around you.
