Sports betting is a large industry around the world and seems to be growing with time. While many people focus on American sports for betting, the Japanese have a large industry in their own country. Despite living on an island and being a fairly small country, Japan is able to put out a lot of competition in several different sports. With great players and competition there is a lot of excitement around the betting scene in sports.

On interesting thing to note is that while the gambling scene in Japan is ever growing, it is actually supposed to be illegal to gamble in Japan. There are a handful of exceptions that people work around. Much of the gambling that takes place is done in horse racing and motor sports.

Most people can relate to the appeal of gambling on horse racing as it seems that in the United States horse racing is made for the sole purpose of gambling. The Japanese people go to watch the races and spend money to try to pick the winner.

The Japanese government has allowed sports gambling for a few reasons and reserves to right to gamble on sports because of special laws. These laws were made ...
... with the intent to boost the money available to local and national governments. Rather than taxing the people more heavily the government allows them spend their money and both sides are benefitted. The government also maintains that a reason for allowing this gambling is to offer another form of entertainment for its citizens.

There are three other types of racing that are available in Japan outside of horse racing. Bicycle racing, motorboat racing and motorcycle racing make up the other sports. These sports are viewed by the people and regulated by the local government to make sure that everything is running in order.

The government is fairly generous in their running of the gambling scene as more than 75 percent of the total sales are put into the prize pool for gamblers to win.

The biggest cities for gambling in the country are most of the cities that you'd expect. Tokyo is the most famous city in Japan and attracts a lot of people and tourists. The government has taken advantage of this and Tokyo is a popular site for gambling. Other cities that have become popular in gambling include Osaka, Yokohama and Nagoya. These cities have betting tickets that can be bought at the circuits and booths within their city limits.

Gambling is a great source of industry for the country, but they are definitely careful to regulate it. All gambling is closely watched by the government. By regulating it closely the country is able to capitalize on profits without having too many of the negative effects that surround gambling in some countries. It is unclear whether or not gambling will eventually spread to other sports within the country. In many other countries the gambling laws are becoming more lenient and the same could eventually happen in Japan.
