Sugar Ray Robinson and Jake LaMotta were the biggest of rivals throughout each of their illustrious careers. Each of these boxers had fantastic moments in their careers and they were seen as two of the best fighters of their time. This rivalry started years before when LaMotta managed to put the first blemish on Robinson's record. These fighters would square off again and again. These two fighters were scheduled to have their 6th fight against each other on February 14, 1951.

Before this fight LaMotta and Robinson had fought 5 times and Robinson had come out on top in 4 of the fights. This was no matter to LaMotta as he was one of the few fighters to give Robinson a tough match. This time these fighters would have the undisputed world middleweight title on the line. The winner of this fight would be a world champion in the eyes of everyone.
The fight was a tough one for several rounds. LaMotta held tough against Robinson, but it was clear that Robinson was in control of the fight. However, LaMotta was tough and had faced Robinson many times already and it appeared that he would have what it would take to stick ...
... with Robinson.

Round after round these two fighters continued battling. Robinson continued in the driver's seat, but LaMotta was definitely still in the ring bringing all that he had to the table. The fight went on this way for 10 rounds as these two fighters threw punches with Robinson maintaining control of the match.

After the 10th round is when things really got crazy. LaMotta clearly did not have much left in the tank and Robinson saw his chance to strike. The 11th round featured Sugar Ray Robinson absolutely demolishing LaMotta with heavy blows. Robinson was throwing out all sorts of combinations and LaMotta had no response. Despite getting beaten up thoroughly, LaMotta continued to stick it out in the ring against Robinson.

The 12th round was even more painful to watch as Robinson continued his onslaught of punches. LaMotta was just too weak and too tired to stop Robinson, but he still had fight in him. Many people thought that he was saving himself for a comeback, but a man could not possibly come back from the beating that he was taking from Robinson.

The 13th and final round of this match continued the dominating performance of Robinson. Robinson was still going strong and LaMotta fell to Robinson in this round by way of technical knockout. This beating was so severe over the last 3 rounds that many people have renamed this fight the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.

Much later after this fight LaMotta was quoted about his experiences in fighting against Sugar Ray Robinson. Regarding fighting Sugar Ray Robinson he said, I fought Sugar Ray so often, I almost got diabetes. He certainly got a good beating in their 6th and final matchup as Robinson was coming at him from every angle with all that he had.
