The 1970 Rose Bowl Game: Michigan Wolverines Vs. Usc Trojans

College Football has a long tradition of amazing bowl games and legendary teams. The 1970 Rose Bowl game was no different. The game was held on January 1, 1970 in Pasadena California. This was actually the 56th Rose Bowl game ever played and it consisted of two great teams; the Michigan Wolverines (8-2) and the USC Trojans (9-0-1).
The USC Trojans were the champions of the Pacific-8 Conference under the coaching of John Mckay and ended the season ranked 5th in the AP polls and 4th in the coaches polls. The Michigan Wolverines were the champions of the Big Ten Conference under the coaching of Bo Schembechler and ended the season ranked 7th in the AP polls and 8th in the coaches polls. In the end, the USC Trojans came away with the victory with a score of 10-3. Also, Bob Chandler (a USC flanker) was named the player of the game.
One of the main stories going into the game was the news the Michigan Wolverines head coach, Bo Schembechler wouldn't be making the game because he suffered a heart attack early on in the week. This would definitely be a factor as the entire team respected him and looked to him for ...
... direction. The other main story was that the USC Trojans were making their fourth consecutive appearance in the Rose Bowl, which had only happened with two other teams. They were the favorite going into the game and showed enough composure to come away with the win.
In the first quarter there wasn't a lot of action as neither team was doing a good job of running the offense down the field. The only points scored in the quarter came off of a field goal by USC kicker Ron Ayala. He put down the 25 yard field goal and gave the Trojans the first lead of the game. In the second quarter Michigan responded with a field goal of their own by kicker Tim Killian who dropped one in from 20 yards out. At halftime the score was tied 3-3 and it was still anybody's game. In the third quarter no one scored until there were only three minutes to play. USC quarterback Jimmy Jones had the ball and threw up a 33 yard touchdown pass to USC's Bob Chandler. Followed by the Ron Ayala extra kick, the Trojans went up 10-3.
In the final quarter the Wolverines tried to come back (only being down a touchdown) but were unable to put together a good enough drive to do so. The game ended with a victory for the USC Trojans off of the stellar play of Jimmy Jones and Bob Chandler. In the aftermath of the game it is important to note that USC ended up finishing the season with only one tie, and no losses. Despite this, however, they were not crowned the national champions. Bob Chandler, who was the MVP for the game, ended up going on to the NFL where he played 11 years for teams like the Oakland Raiders and the Buffalo Bills.
