Bing Grows In Search Market Share
According to the most recent data from comScore, Bing’s market share grew 0.3% in just one month, from September to October this year. Does this perhaps signal that it produced more relevant results than Google in the lead up to the holiday season? It took some time, but now Bing is seeing its market share grow.
Google also grew 0.2% during the same time frame, but surely the giant is pouring all over this data to find out what Bing is doing right. It has been a while since any search engine in the USA made gains against Google; Yahoo, Ask and AOL all lost ground during that month. The possibility of Yahoo’s major decline has even become a foregone conclusion in some circles.
However, since Bing’s main claim is that it will cancel all the noise (supposedly found on a Google search) and yield only relevant results. Their ad campaigns where each person takes the last word someone else said to come up with a completely irrelevant topic has left as indelible a mark as Geico’s Gecko, but it did not seem that many people were flocking to the search engine ...
... because of it.
Apparently they are. Although Google’s market share is a whopping 66%, Bing is inching up to 11.5 %, letting the competition know that Microsoft is not dead yet. Add to that mix the fact that Microsoft recently launched adCenter, their answer to Google’s Adwords, and it’s easy to predict Bing’s future in terms of increased e-business support.
Now that users are finding Bing more useful, and that Microsoft’s adCenter allows online businesses to target both Bing and Yahoo users through one paid search campaign, the search engine’s popularity is set to grow. Together, Bing and Yahoo have 23% of the market. That’s millions of users.
And the effect of Bing’s growth in market share is that online businesses will try to tap into those millions of users, bringing not only an increase in ad revenue for them, but it will in turn make the search engine more user friendly. Watch out Google.
In the past, a PPC campaign on Bing or Yahoo was not worth the effort or expense for many online companies. The sites separately did not have enough of the market to warrant the venture. Now that Microsoft’s adCenter has combined their market shares, and that Bing’s share is growing, the venture is now certainly worthwhile.
For companies seeking to take advantage of this market trend by tapping into a demographic that does not turn to Google, search engine optimization is a must.
A Pay Per Click advertising campaign using adCenter must be managed the same way a Google Adwords campaign would be managed. It must begin with thorough research and there must be constant analysis and adjustments to the campaign to take into account the behavioral changes of users, new technologies and the competition.
