Water damage can happen to anybody even though it's not tropical storm season. Heavy rains and surging river waters after all are not the only reasons for such type of damage. Most of the time actually, poor home maintenance is the culprit.

Leaking pipes, defective appliances and even a dripping faucet can cause tremendous damage in the long run. So if prevention didn't work this time, you must at least know how to proceed with water damage cleanup.

Whether the damage is caused by a simple roof leak or major flooding, the immediate concern is removing standing water. If the flooding is in the basement and there is still outside flooding, wait till the water recedes before proceeding with water extraction. The pressure from outside flooding can weaken the structural integrity of an empty basement so it's better to wait a little longer. But if it's possible to add up on ventilation, do so. Open windows at least or install dehumidifiers.

Turn off power and gas valves as well. Just use an outside source for your sump pump, fans and dehumidifiers. Using a generator is also an alternative but make sure that ...
... it is placed in a well-ventilated area away from people.

Before starting any cleanup efforts, make sure that you're properly protected. Wear rubber boots, waterproof gloves and appropriate clothing. If the standing water has been inside the home for a few days, use a mask just to make sure that toxic fumes wouldn't pose health risk.

After the water extraction, clean the affected area using detergent or soap then disinfect and dry it as well. Flooding can cause sewage contamination too so decontamination may also be needed.

Segregate items according to porosity. Some porous items are better replaced for safety purposes especially carpets which can absorb and retain bacteria and viruses. However, a professional water damage cleanup company can suggest various solutions to take care of the problems.

High-value items must be handled by professionals since some materials can easily deteriorate or get worse when treated with inappropriate chemicals. A thorough inspection must be in order as well to make sure that other damages are immediately taken care of and prevent future water damage incidents.
