What Are Dreams?
Dreams occur every time we go to sleep, often you won't remember them when you wake up - but it is certain you will have dreamt. One analogy is that your brain is like a huge filing cabinet, and it records everything you touch, taste, smell and hear and then your dreams will often be a mixed-up version of a lot of these messages. The interesting thing comes from what people dream about and the outside influences that cause them to have these thoughts. We take a quick look at different types of dreams and what they mean. However you must remember that because the brain is such a complex organ, most of these ideas are theories and often have little or no scientific research to back them up.
Most dreams take place when you are in a type of sleep called REM (rapid eye movement) dreams that occur in this state of sleep are usually the ones that are remembered the most. During this period of sleep the body will often undergo some changes including faster breathing, relaxed muscles and a higher brain activity.
The different types of dreams you can have range from Lucid dreams to Real World dreams, a Lucid dream is one ...
... where the dreamer understands that they are dreaming and are not in the real world, and can therefore control their actions and other peoples actions as well. Whereas DAMT (dreams of absent minded transgression) depict actions that are avoided in real life but occur in their dream. It is particularly common in people who are trying to give up smoking - in the dream they find themselves smoking. The final type of dream to look at is Real World dreams. This is where events that occur in the real world affect what happens in the dream. For instance, an alarm clock may ring in real life and the dreamer thinks it is their phone ringing in a dream!
One of the biggest questions facing people interested in dreams is what they mean. There are a whole range of interpretations of what dreams mean, but we take a look at some of the most common dreams and their interpretations. Flying; some believe that this suggests that the dreamer is not grounded, that they are worrying about issues that do not matter in real life and have their "head in the clouds". This is a pretty wide interpretation but it could be an explanation for this type of dream. Another common dream is teeth falling out which suggests that the dreamer is worried about their appearance or about embarrassment. It can however also suggest the dreamer is anxious that there will soon be a big change in their life. Another common dream is being pregnant, and it is suggested that this means the dreamer will soon have a new idea, or take a new turn in their life.
Whether you believe that dreams are just a jumbled group of images created by your brain, or you think they hold a secret to our modern life, you cannot deny they are extremely interesting and thought provoking.
