Central heating systems generate heat in part of a building or throughout it. This is done from a particular point, usually a furnace room in the case of a house or, with regards to a larger building, a mechanical room.

As is the case with any equipment, the devices need to be maintained regularly to ensure their efficient, effective and safe functioning. It is advisable to have a registered heating engineer do this, especially with regards to boilers, and where any damage is suspected in the units, an engineer should be called out to do the necessary assessments and repairs.

Ideally, servicing should be carried out annually. In the case of older boilers, these should be turned on for a short while on a monthly basis when not in use.

Where radiators are used, the thermostats in the rooms should be kept at lower levels, optimally between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius or 64.4 and 38 degrees Fahrenheit so that less effort is required from the boiler. If a radiator is then not warming up, this could signal that the thermostat is not working correctly or that there is a fault with the boiler.

Where there is a regular decrease in pressure in the unit, it may be caused by a leak too. Moreover, users of heating equipment should always smell for gas leaks. It is a good idea to have a carbon monoxide monitor installed with heaters as the gas is colorless, tasteless and odorless, but very poisonous. The pilot light of a natural gas system should show only a clear, blue flame and not a yellow or orange one. In addition, any loud, clanging noises or kettling sounds emanating from the unit when it is on could indicate that there is a build-up of sludge or corrosive materials in the pipes. A power flushing would then need to be performed. The sounds could also be a sign of a build-up of air and then there would be a need for the radiators to be bled. This action might also be necessary if the heat of a radiator is not being distributed evenly.

By making sure that these basic checks are performed regularly and that the vents of the central heating systems are not obstructed, users can enjoy winter months. The heating can be relied on to provide warmth and a cozy environment during the crisp, cold times of the year.
