Furnishing any overseas property can sometimes be a daunting prospect, language barriers, cultural differences and general market conditions can make it a surprisingly frustrating experience, especially for the first time buyer.

Mark Sykes, Operations Director of Cyprus Luxury Furniture offers the following advice to prospective furniture buyers.

1) Don't think doing it yourself will save you money, it may not

Buying furniture in Cyprus, is not like doing so in the UK. There isn't much competition so pirces are high and the supply of good qualiy, cheap and stylish furniture is limited to specialist companies such as ourselves. We actually set up in business because we found it such a harrowing experience. The furniture was expensive and the service was slack to say the least. By all means price up shipping your own furniture, dealing with customs, hiring vehicles, having somewhere to unload your container. Don't forget to factor in your time too. After all you bought in Cyprus to enjoy, not to waste your precious time racing round lugging furniture.

2) Don't expect to pay UK prices

There is ...
... little competition so generally prices for furniture and electricals are higher than in the UK. If you do ship electrical items out from the UK, do check the terms of the warranty, they may not be covered if removed from the country of purchase.

3) Check the payment terms of suppliers

Many suppliers in Cyprus request cleared funds in full sometimes several weeks prior to installation. Unfortunatley this has resulted in some customers parting with several thousand Euros only to find their chosen vendor has ceased trading. To avoid this check payment terms thoroughly. It's not unreasonable to expect a sizeable deposit with order with the balance payable just before delivery. Also try and use a company who accept Credit Cards, should there be a problem you have a good chance of getting your money back. Choosing a UK based supplier will also help.

4) Will it fit?

It's wise to ensure your chosen furniture will fit your property. Pay close attention to large items such as sofas and if you've bought an apartment don't forget to check access to your property. If possible ask the supplier to work out whether your furniture will fit. Some suppliers will plan for you based on a copy of your floor plans.

5) Check what installed means

It sounds obvious, but not all suppliers will build all your furniture and remove all of the packing and rubbish.

6) Ask for a discount
Ok not every supplier is going to offer a discount but its worth asking. Be wary of huge discounts though, in this climate most suppliers are working on tight margins so anybody offering huge discounts is probably loading their prices to start with.
