2001 World Series Of Poker

The 2001 World Series of Poker was an event that rivaled the World Series of Poker events of years past. This event was now decades old and the popularity of the World Series of Poker was growing more rapidly than ever before. The World Series of Poker is an event in which the best poker players from all around the world gather around to put their skills to the test against other players. For the main event each of the players is responsible for buying their way into the tournament with a 10 thousand dollar entry fee. The entry fee is put into the pot and the prize money is derived from it.
In the early days of the World Series of Poker there were very few entrants relative to what we started to see in the 2000s. The 2001 World Series of Poker had 613 entries. This meant that not only first place would win a prize of over 1 million dollars, but 2nd place as well. This was a significant step as for years and years the winner of the entire event would only bring home a million dollars. The top player in the main event would take home 1.5 million dollars in 2001.
The main event was not the only thing for poker players ...
... at the World Series of Poker. There were also other opportunities to put their skills to the test if No Limit Texas Hold ‘Em wasn't their game. There were 25 preliminary events in which players could take home huge prizes of more than 400 thousand dollars. The World Series of Poker was really growing in every way.
This event included a rapid decline in players that was even greater than that of years before. With so many players in the tournament it was impossible for viewers and fans to keep track of all of the players that were removed from tables early on. There were great players in the poker world that were eliminated early on as the competition of the event was at a higher level than ever before.
As the tables started to empty there were certain players that started to stand out. Some of them were big names, such as Dewey Tomko, that people had been watching in the World Series of Poker for several years. Other names such as Henry Nowakowski were actually not very well renowned. The last 9 players included those two players along with Juan Carlos Mortensen, Stan Schrier, Phil Gordon, Phil Hellmuth Jr., Mike Matusow, Steve Riehle and John Inashima.
While all of these players were having solid tournaments, only one player would be able to come out on top. As time went on it was clear that Juan Carlos Mortensen would be the player to come out on top of the tournament. Mortensen would win the 1.5 million dollar prize and the prized bracelet. Tomko would be the player that would take home just under 1.1 million dollars for his second place prize at the event. Stan Schrier would play a solid tournament in order to place third. He would bring home just under 700 thousand dollars.
