Best Man's Speeches Don't Have To Be A Problem
Best man's speeches are probably the ones that cost most sleepless nights. When the groom asks his brother or friend to be his best man he is conferring an honour on him. It is only as the wedding day approaches that the best man realises that he is supposed to give a speech at the wedding. Then he starts worrying. What should he say and how should he say it? His friends are usually grateful that they do not have to be in his place and are quite often more likely to tease him than to be helpful.
Added to the fact of best man speeches is the fact that they are supposed to be the M.C. for the occasion. That is, of course, if there is not already a professional M.C. So the poor best man has the added duty of introducing the other speakers while inwardly practising his own best man's speech. Basically though, all he has to do is tell the audience his relationship with the groom and speak of that relationship.
He may be a brother who has shared the excitement of opening Christmas stockings over the years or a best friend who has gone on vacation with him or even a colleague who has worked with him in the same department. ...
... Whatever that relationship he will have a view of the groom that will be new to many of the guests. He may tell them that the groom has three left feet when dancing or that he was a brilliant footballer. He should paint a picture of times he has shared with the groom and his family. He might mention playing golf with the father of the groom or dining with the family where the mother of the groom made him a welcome guest.
His speech should go on to express his admiration for the beautiful bride the groom has chosen. It is ideal if he can say something about her home background. So he may say that the bride has inherited her mother's charm or her father's sense of humour. A few words about the special guests at the wedding will make the speech inclusive. Above all the best man's speech should express his good wishes to the couple on their wedding day.
Finally it is his duty to reply to the groom's toast to the bridesmaids. Naturally he will agree that they are lovely and have been a wonderful support to the bride. If there are children involved he should mention them by name so that the guests can Ooh and Aah and their parents will love him for it.
