Getting to the top of Google's Search Results is not always as hard as it seems. And, that is where you want your web pages to be because 90% of all web traffic comes from one of the 10 web pages listed on the first page of a search engine's Search Results.

While it is probably impossible to get each of your web pages onto the first page of Google's Search Results, if you follow a few simple rules you can get several of them there.

After all, somebody is at the top. Why them and not you? So, what are you waiting for? Start making your own luck, build your web page to get to the top of Google and begin promoting your website the right way!

You see, every web page (whether you know it or not) depends upon great keyword selection. Select the right keyword and you will get good traffic without a lot of competition. Pick a poor keyword and you may be lost in the vast darkness of the web.

Here are step-by-step instructions to "make" your own luck. Easy, free, and very powerful.

Build your web page around a keyword that has both of these characteristics: global monthly searches of 3,000 or more (the higher the better) and fewer than 80,000 competing pages on Google (the fewer the better).

Any keyword getting less than 3,000 searches monthly will not produce enough daily traffic to worry about so stay away from keywords that do not meet that criteria. 4,000 is better than 3,000; 10,000+ is better yet, and so on. Use free software like the Google Adwords Keyword Tool to find keywords satisfying or exceeding the 3,000 searches/month element.

Then, equally importantly, select that keyword only if it meets the second criteria: fewer than 80,000 competing web pages for the exact same keyword.

Simply go to the Google browser (not Yahoo or Bing), put the keyword between apostrophes, and click. You will immediately see the number of competing pages. Use 80,000 as the ceiling but remember that for this element, the lower the better.

But, if the keyword has good traffic but the number of competing web pages is too high, what can you do?

Simply make a little change and search again. Sometimes the addition of a single letter (from singular to plural) or a single word will get you below the 80,000 magic number.

For example. Suppose you are writing a page about how to build a blog. Using Google Adwords Keyword Tool you see the keyword blog software has 60,500 global monthly searches. Wonderful! Lots of searches.

But, when you take that keyword, put it between quotation marks ("blog software") and search it on Google's browser, you find over 10,000,000 competing pages. Impossible to compete? Not at all.

Change the search to "blog software recommendations" and voila!, there are only about 25,000 competing pages.

Now that you have "made" your own luck, it is time to get to the top of Google by intelligent website promotion. The strategy is to build backlinks to each web page, one web page at a time, using a diverse, consistent approach:

1. Write articles and submit to dozens, even hundreds, of free article directories. Use cheap software or services to create and post unique articles for best results. Put two backlinks in each article, one to the homepage and the other to the page being promoted, with appropriate keyword anchor text. Automate this process for efficiency.
2. Bookmark each new web page to social network sites using free, automated software. Bookmarking can bring in huge traffic and links and the software will do everything at the click of a button.
3. Contribute quality blog posts and comments to relevant, high Google Page Rank, do follow blogs.
