This section describes the physical infrastructure components of the A+ Exams authentication process and then explains how the process works.
Physical Infrastructure Components of the 802.Ix Authentication Process
The 802.Ix authentication process is combined with the authorization process and includes these components:
A wireless client or supplicant
A wireless AP with two ports:
An uncontrolled port to which any client can request and through which a client can negotiate a connection with the controlled port
A controlled port that grants access to authenticated and authorized clients
A RADIUS server (in this example, IAS) or authenticator that serves as the control agent
An authenticating server (the Windows Server 2003 domain controller) that can validate the presented client credentials
These components are shown in A+ certificate. In the figure, the client has requested access but has not been authenticated; therefore, the second, controlled port is not available to it.
You can ...
... also configure computer authentication behavior on the IEEE 802.Ix tab (shown in Figure 12-11). Choices are:
Authenticate As Guest When User Or Computer Information Is Unavailable. This choice is useful if guests "will be allowed to access the wireless network.
Authentication As Computer When Computer Information Is Available. This allows the computer to authenticate even if no one is logged on. This is a good thing if the computer must maintain a connection to the network.
Computer Authentication. Within this drop down list, three choices are possible:
User Re-Authentication. The computer will authenticate every time the user does.
User Authentication. The computer will authenticate "when the user logs on.
Computer Only. The computer will authenticate only when the computer is started.
Connection request policies are used to manage RADIUS requests from wireless APs. Wireless APs must be identified on the IAS server to prevent rogue access points from participating in your wireless and wired networks. Connection request free CompTIA certification exam questions policies can set elate and time restrictions and ensure that authentication is made against Active Directory.
