If you are planning on wood flooring for your home, chances are that you have taken a look at solid oak flooring. Solid oak flooring usually comes in its natural state and must be stained and varnished before it is installed. You can save money if you stain wood flooring on your own instead of allowing someone else to do this job for you. This is not difficult, although you will want to be sure that you use the same type of stain for the entire floor so that it goes on uniform. Solid oak flooring is very porous and will absorb the stain quicker than any other wood flooring.

You should take a look at the décor of your home as well as the stains that are on the market when it comes to wood flooring. You should then choose a stain that you like. In some cases, the stains that are used for wood flooring are also varnishes as well. This means that they contain a seal coat as well as a color coat. You can find out more about the type of stains that are available at any hardware store or store that sells paints.

Once you make up your mind as to how you want to stain your solid oak flooring, you can then ...
... commence to staining. You will want to use a good brush to put on the stain and then wipe it off with a clean cloth. Wood stain that is used on wood flooring is not opaque and should be translucent when going on the wood. You will want some of the natural wood to show through when using a stain.

Once the stain dries on the solid oak flooring, you are ready to put on a seal coat. You should always put a seal coat on the wood flooring as it will make it easier to keep it clean and free from dust and debris. You can put the seal coat on after the floor has been installed as this is usually easier and will insure that the sealant is spread evenly throughout the wood flooring. While you can stain individual pieces of the solid oak flooring and it will not matter if the colors are a bit off here and there as they will make the wood flooring look more natural, you do not want to have the same effect when you are putting on the seal coat. You want the seal coat on the solid oak flooring to be even throughout.

Most people today prefer a more natural look when it comes to wood flooring and will go with a matte finish instead of a high gloss finish. If you want some sheen to the solid oak flooring, you can always go with an eggshell finish which will give it a slightly gloss. You should make sure that you have proper ventilation when you are staining and sealing wood flooring as the stains and seal coats are made up of oil based products with an odor. It will take a few days before the seal coat of the solid oak flooring is completely dry, during which time you should refrain from stepping on it. Once the sealing is complete and dry on the wood flooring, you can then enjoy your new floors.
