The Golden Retriever is a highly active breed and daily activities are vital for this pet's daily care. They should be given enough time and space where they can be able to play freely. Swimming, jogging, biking, or hiking are some activities that this breed may enjoy. It is important to give them both mental and physical activities to work on.

Temperament

They are known to possess quick reflexes, with the love for pleasing, making them not the ideal guard dogs.

Overview

A highly popular Gundog, the Golden Retriever is recognized today for their excellence in showmanship, obedience, field trials, and companionship. Due to their dense undercoat, this breed is excellent in water, as well as over ground due to their long and powerful strides.

Care

The dense coat of the Golden Retriever requires regular grooming and trimming. Their naturally water-repellant undercoat is very thick, and should be brushed regularly to prevent them from matting. The feathers on their front legs should also be constantly trimmed along with the hair between their pads. Extra care should be given especially in Spring, as this is their shedding season. Bathing should be done when needed as their coat sheds dirt on its own.

Training

Golden Retrievers are known to be easily trained. Aside from their high intelligence, they are also eager to please, and elated to learn, which makes them learn tricks and commands quickly. Dogs of their size do best with obedience training, and a social program that gives them the chance to meet other dogs. This breed can be easily taught to do jobs. They are even popular candidates of being aid dogs due to their sharp minds. In training the Golden Retriever, it is best to start with basic commands, and as soon as they master these, they will be more manageable.

Character

This active, powerful, and well-balanced retriever has an eager, self-confident, and alert character. The Golden Retriever makes an ideal companion for people with active lifestyle, as well as family pet, guide, service dog, or gun dog.
