Breed Description

The German Wirehaired Pointer is a unique medium-sized muscular breed. This hunting dog has a sturdy build that is made for hunting all day through all types of cover. A well-muscled breed, they normally weigh between 60-70 pounds, and has an average height from 22-26 inches at the shoulder.

Coat

Their functional wiry coat is the German Wirehaired Pointer's most distinguishing characteristic. Their weather-resistant and water-repellent double coat has a dense inner coat that acts as insulator against cold climate, but is too thin in summer that leaves it almost invisible. Their topcoat is harsh, wiry, straight, lays flat, and about one to two inches long. Their outer coat is sufficiently long to protect them from the rough cover, but not too long to hide the shape of their bodies.

Activity

This energetic breed has limitless vigor. It is imperative that the German Wirehaired Pointer gets strenuous exercise on a daily basis to avoid them from being high-strung and extremely restless indoors. This breed is so active that they can be quite a challenge for even the most active ...
... family.

Temperament

German Wirehaired Pointers thrive on human companionship. They are generally loyal, affectionate, intelligent, and energetic. They are vigorous, playful, and lively, with the eagerness of working for their owners. Bred originally to be a hunter, this breed is known to be a perfect gun dog. They are skillful at any hunting activities due to their keen nose and gift in tracking, retrieving, and pointing on both land and water.

Overview

The German Wirehaired Pointer is a well-muscled hunting breed. This mid-sized dog has a remarkable appearance, particularly the wiry weather-resistant, almost water-repellant coat.

Care

The German Wirehaired Pointer is relatively easy to care for. Brushing once or twice weekly is usually enough, but occasional stripping is recommended in spring and fall. They should only be bathed when needed, ensuring the ears are cleaned regularly. Keep their feet neat by cleaning it regularly especially when they spent time outdoors.

Training

The German Wirehaired Pointer requires training. Consistent and firm training should start as early as puppyhood. Housebreaking is one of the difficult aspects of training this breed. Confinement with regular access to the bathroom is two of the most important components in housetraining this breed. This breed should be kept in a small room where they can regularly access outdoors through a door. In that way, they are in control when they go outside.

Socialization is also essential in properly training the German Wirehaired Pointer. The best time to start this is when they are between 7 weeks to 6 months old. This is the recommended time for them to be exposed to new places and people.

Character

A highly devoted family dog, the German Wirehaired Pointer ignores stranger and will, with great love and affection, greet their friends and family. This active and highly intelligent breed is eager to learn, and loyal to their family.
