Overview

The English Springer Spaniel is a breed that is considered the founding ancestor of Spaniels. This is among of the largest Spaniel breeds, and was relatively popular during Renaissance period for being ideal companions for European hunters. There are two types of the English Springer Spaniel, those bred for conformation ring (the Bench Bred), and those bred for field trials and/or hunting (the Field Bred).

Care

Their double coats are relatively easy to groom. Regular brushing with firm bristle brush keeps it neat. The Bench Bred requires more attention, though. Both varieties require dry shampooing and bathing only when absolutely necessary and should regularly check the ears for any signs of infection.

Training

The English Springer Spaniel is very intelligent, obedient and skillful breed. Due to these traits, they are easy to train. They have the attentiveness and watchfulness that make them the ideal performance dog, family pet and hunting companion. As they are emotional dogs, they tend to get hurt easily. So, training should be done with positive approach as forceful training leads to a dog that is uneager to please. Due to their intelligence, they require mental stimulation. An English Springer Spaniel that is untrained will become bored, eventually looking for other ways to amuse themselves including obsessive, very energetic, and destructive behavior.
