Breed Description

The Fila Brasileiro, also known as Brazilian Mastiff, is a large working dog that was developed in Brazil. This is a Molosser breed with loose skin and large bones. Breed standards only accept males that weigh at least 100 pounds, and stands between 25.5-29.5 inches, and females that are a bit smaller to weigh at least 90 pounds and stands between 23.5-27.5 inches at the withers.

Coat

The Fila Brasileiro has a short and smooth coat that is tight to the skin. Breed standards permit all solid colors aside from mouse grey, patched dogs, dappled, white, and black or tan. Brindles of any basic color are also accepted, and may appear with stripes of either less or very strong intensity.

Activity

The Fila Brasileiro requires moderate amount of exercise. Exercise keeps them in shape, although it is not advisable for those in warm climates for they may overheat. During puppyhood, they should not be given too much exercise as their growing joints, bones, and ligaments shouldn't be over-stressed since this may cause damage. This breed is an average shedder.

They make great household pet, being gentle, protective, and very loyal to their owners and family members. Potential owners should always keep in mind that this breed doesn't like strangers. They loathe strangers, and unlike any of the other breeds, they cannot be socialized to like strangers. Their hatred of strangers can be controlled through early socialization. A breed not recommended for the average pet owner, this dog might be a handful.

Overview

The Fila Brasileiro is a dedicated and loyal companion dog. They have very strong protective instincts, yet very affectionate. It is important to keep them on a leash with a lead all the time as they are known to hate strangers, and may attack suddenly if they think the situation calls for it.

Care

The Fila Brasileiro has a short-haired coat that is easy to care for. Brushing with firm bristle brush and wiping over their coats with a damp cloth or chamois for a shiny finish should be enough to keep their fur healthy. Bathing or dry shampooing should only be done when absolutely necessary.

Training

This large powerful dog is not for everyone, especially for a first-time dog owner. Obedience and early socialization is required if used as a household pet. The Fila Brasileiro can be hard to control. A dominant owner is needed for this breed to be obedient and well-mannered. As with other breed of dogs, training should be done with firmness, consistency, and positive reinforcement to come up with a loving household pet, fit for a family with older respectable and respectable children.
