Secondhand smoke means that non-smokers receive passive smoking more than 15 minutes a day. In daily life, most people cannot completely avoid smoke, and thus become passive smokers. When people are smoking, they are not only damage their own health but also affect non-smokers.

According to the study, the smoke after burning cigarette contains over four thousand kinds of harmful substances which can be divided into four categories from medical point of view.

Carbon monoxide: the concentration of cigarette smoke is about four ten thousandths, and the bond with red blood cells to produce carbon monoxide is about 210 times than oxygen. So as carbon monoxide is inhaled, the red blood cells transport capacity of oxygen will be reduced, leaving the body lack of oxygen.

Nicotine: as it enters the human body, it will produce the various effects, including the four limbs peripheral vasoconstriction, heart rate quickening, blood pressure increasing, breathing fast, mental status changes and platelet aggregation, which is to cause heart blood vessel blockage, hypertension, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. ...
...

Irritating substances: these substances will not only irritate eyes, noses, throats, but also stimulate the secretion of bronchial submucosal glands and result in acute bronchial inflammation and chronic bronchitis.

Carcinogenic substances: in addition to nicotine which has been as blastomogen, smoke contains more radioactive elements such as polonium. Polonium will volatilize in smoking and absorbed by human body. The alpha rays it released will damage body cells and human immune system, creating an environment for the growth of cancer cells.

Needless to say, the above four categories of hazardous materials are harmful to smokers and secondhand smokers. The research result also showed that passive smoking effects on the body are similar to the smoker, because the urine of passive smokers also contains metabolins such as nicotine.
