Speaking simply, painkillers also known as analgesics are any medications that can provide pain relief effect to a certain extent. In most cases, the desired effect is achieved through blocking nerve signals that transmit the painful sensations to the brain. This allows the pain relief to be achieved without affecting the consciousness or thinking reactions of the person taking painkillers. There is a vast array of different substances that can act as painkillers, and they are usually divided into two distinct classes of analgesics: narcotics and non-narcotics. Some specialists also distinct a third class, which includes anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and different NSAIDS. And while these drugs provide a certain degree of pain relief, they can't be regarded as painkillers because their initial purpose is to minimize inflammation (and this is what provides the pain relief effect in some cases).

Non-narcotic analgesics

Acetaminophen is one of the most popular and widely spread analgesic non-narcotic drugs that is available without prescription. Its popularity is due to its effectiveness when it comes to ...
... relieving mild to moderate acute pain. Besides, it's one of the cheapest painkiller drugs you will find in your local pharmacy. Still, one should be very cautious when using this drug, because the wrong dosage can lead to very serious side effects. The maximum daily dosage should not exceed 4000mg and you should avoid taking such a dosage for a long period of time, otherwise you risk experiencing liver damage or even liver failure. This is especially harmful when using acetaminophen mixed with alcohol. Another important thing to know is that this substance can be found in over 600 prescription and non-prescription medications for various use. So before using acetaminophen for pain relief, make sure to read the info labels of all the drugs you're currently taking, in order to avoid the risk of overdosing it.

Narcotic analgesics

The are two sub-classes of narcotics available on the market: opiates and opioids. Opiates are the more classic painkillers that were used earlier. These are natural substances produced from poppy seeds. They provide a very strong painkiller effect, however their main downside is that they stimulate hallucinations, changes in behavior, thoughts and are often used as recreational drugs. Opioids on the other hand, are chemical derivatives of opiates that are usually free of these harmful side effects. Such artificial opioids as Tramadol and Demedrol are widely used for relieving pain of different intensity. Tramadol is available in different release forms and can be used for dealing with both acute and chronic pain. However, most opioids like Tramadol are very potent medications and are only available through a prescription because of the potential health hazards that a wrong dosage can produce.

When dealing with analgesics, the most important thing you should understand is that the dosage matters. The right dosage of any analgesic can give you the necessary pain relief. However, when the dosage is exceeded or the drug is taken for too long you can actually harm yourself and worsen your condition. So if pain has become a problem for you, ask your doctor first. Don't experiment with drugs on your own, because your health is at stake.
