Nowadays we almost can't look at a webpage, without seeing some form of advertising on it. Especially when you offer a service for free, advertising is a way of making money you can't go round. Your servers need to be paid and also you want to make a living. Placing advertising on your website seems a simple job, just copy and paste the JavaScript code and you are done! There are some dangers in placing ads on your website that you should be aware of. In my opinion advertisement should never interfere with user experience; when a page is loading very slowly, your visitors will most certainly click away. Serving adware through your site is even worse Probably you were not aware, but a visitor will in general always blame the owner!

This article has been devoted to two simple ways of improving your advertising implementation. Like most people say in general: better safe than sorry.

Advertisement should be load from an iframe
The first quick win I would like to point out is the way you implement advertising on your website. Just copy and paste the ad code right into the HTML source of your page isn't the right ...
... way to go. Most websites displaying advertisement have placed an invocation code of a big advertisement agency on their portals. Currently I have Google Adsense running on some of my online game portals, known to be sometimes slow.

The problem with big ad networks is that they in their turn receive advertisement through other, smaller agencies. An ad served on your webpage can sometimes be looped through 5 or more servers, which makes it load very slow. In some occasions an ad doesn't even load at all. When you have placed invocation code for such an ad directly into the source of your page, it will cause that given webpage to hang! You don't want to let your visitors wait, because an ad has to load, do you? Instead create a separate HTML page with the ad invocation code and load it from an iframe placed in your page source. This way your page will keep loading.

Check your ads through (web) proxies
When you operate an international website, you probably receive visitors from all over the world. During the years I worked for an international company we once discovered we were serving malware ads to visitors from a certain country! Without the use of a proxy server we never would have found this out, at least not until it already was too late... Not only would we have damaged our reputation, it could also happen that a virus scanner on a local PC would have blocked our site.

We had to learn both of these quick wins the hard way. Incorrect implementation of advertising will with no doubt cost you visitors. Without visitors you won't make any money, so both advertising and visitors have to co-exist in a peaceful way. Keeping both of these points in mind can save you a lot of problems.
