The US lottery has grown into a very successful industry over the years, having won over the hearts of millions of people from all over the country, all secretly chasing the prospect of hitting it big with a life-changing Jackpot. A factory of dreams in its own right, the national lottery encourages throngs of avid fans to buy tickets and check for lottery results on a constant basis, in hope that someday they too will nail down the winning numbers and become millionaires overnight.

Although there are more than 200 lottery games available in the US at present, most of the national lottery action revolves around just two categories of games: basic multi-number games and multi-number games with two sets of numbers. In this article, we will have a closer look at both.

1. Basic Multi-Number Games

These types of US lottery games require players to select 4, 5, or 6 numbers from 1 to a certain maximum threshold imposed by the game.

A popular multi-number game in this category is the Classic Lotto, a 6-number game (6/49) which allows players to choose 6 numbers from 1 to 49. A good example of a 5-number game would be Fantasy 5, denoted by 5/N, with the value of N varying from one state to another.

With the exception of the former Mix & Match game in the state of Pennsylvania, the order in which players select their lottery numbers doesn't matter. When it comes to winnings, multi-number national lottery games award prizes to players who get at least 2 -- or in some states, 3 -- numbers right. Winning the Jackpot requires getting all the n numbers right on the ticket.

In some states, apart from the n numbers mentioned earlier, each play involves drawing another number from the same set, which is commonly referred to as the bonus ball. While the bonus ball doesn't interfere with the way players select their numbers, the addition of this feature helps increase the amount of lower prizes, and is used to encourage more action from the public.

2. Multi-Number Games with Two Sets of Numbers

This category of US lottery games is defined by the abbreviation n/N + m/M, which indicates that players have to pick n numbers from 1 to N from the first string, and m more numbers from 1 to M from the remaining string. Just like with basic multi-number games, the order in which the numbers are chosen has no effect on the game.

With the exception of the multi-state lottery game called 2 x 2, which requires players to pick 2 numbers from both sets, all other US lottery games in this class are played by choosing a single number from the second set - for instance, m = 1. Therefore, all these games can be expressed through the following formula: n/N + 1/M.

The number chosen from the second string of numbers is typically referred to as the Mega Ball or the Extra Ball. Apart from this additional number, depending on the type of game, players may have to select 4, 5, or 6 numbers from the first set. Two notable examples of multi-number games with two sets of numbers are the Powerball (denoted by the 5/59 + 1/39 formula) and the Mega Millions (denoted by the 5/56 + 1/46 formula).
