The 1938 World Cup would be the third event of its sort. It was decided by FIFA in 1936 that the upcoming event would be held in France. The previous event was won by Italy and many people expected that Italy would show strong once again.

There were 16 teams that would play for the tournament World Cup. One team was forced to withdraw before the tournament. Spain was in the middle of the Spanish Civil War and was unable to participate in the event. This was the first time in the history of the World Cup that a team was unable to play because of war.

Italy Started out with a victory in the tournament, but it was certainly not an easy one. Norway hung tough with Italy and Italy did not score the winning goal until the 94th minute of the game.

France would play Belgium and the winner of these two teams would take on Italy. France was just too strong as they were playing in their home country. They managed to take home the victory with an impressive 3-1 effort.

Hungary dominated the team from the Dutch East Indies 6-0. Switzerland and Germany played to see who would take on Hungary. Switzerland would win to advance.

Sweden would advance by default as Austria was unable to play. Cuba beat out Romania in a close one to advance to play Sweden.

The next round featured a dominant effort from Sweden, winning 8-0 over Cuba. Hungary also managed to shut out Switzerland 2-0 to set up a matchup between Hungary and Sweden.

Brazil and Czechoslovakia played tough, but Brazil would ultimately come out on top. Italy and France would play in a game that had high expectations. This game featured the defending champions against the home team. Italy would ultimately take the win with a 3-1 effort. Brazil and Italy were now set to face off.

Brazil played in all close games during the tournament and their matchup against Italy was no exception. While they were able to come out on top in the previous games, Italy was just too good in this one. Italy advanced to the Finals with a 2-1 victory over Brazil.

Hungary and Sweden faced off as neither team had yet allowed a goal in the tournament. Neither team was able to put up a shutout, but Hungary was just too solid on both sides of the ball. They scored 5 goals, while only allowing Sweden one goal in the game.

Italy and Hungary would be the two teams squaring off for the World Cup Final. Italy won the year before and played like a championship team. They outscored Hungary 4-2 in the game and won the World Cup for the 2nd consecutive year.
