The Collie is a lean, strong breed that has a well-proportioned body. This medium-sized herding dog is about 22-55 pounds, with the height of 22-26 inches.

Coat

The double-coated Collie has two varieties: the Rough, and the Smooth Collies. The rough variety has extensive, tight, and rough texture coat that requires a great deal of grooming. Their undercoat is furry, and gentle. The smooth kind is relatively easy to groom. This short, dense, and stiff coat is smooth to touch. They have an inner coat that is furry that makes it hard to see their skin. Both coat varieties of Collies have four standard colors namely: tricolor, blue, merle, white, and sable and white.

Activity

The two types of Collie both require a great deal of exercise. They love running around off-leash, and it is the best way to exercise this breed. Owners should be wary if keeping their Collies off-leash, as they tend to round up strangers and other animals. Although, they generally do not exhibit aggressive behavior, it is important to have them socialized before doing any off-leash activities.

Temperament

The Collie ...
... is a quick, sharp-minded breed with a naturally sweet temperament. They have a friendly nature, and gets along well with other animals. They are very devoted to their masters, with an outstanding caring nature. They are obedient and gentle pet that loves playing around particularly with children with games such as hide and seek, and tug of war.

Collies are very sensitive. If there are times that they do something wrong, they should never be shown any untoward behavior by their masters. Instead, owners should show them what should've been done, and they will be able to understand. The Collies are generally sociable, and enjoy being around people and other animals. Due to this fact, they should never be left alone for extended periods of time.

Overview

Collies have two varieties: the Rough and Smooth Collie. Also known as the Scottish Collie, this breed stayed in Scotland for a long time. They are brainy, and hardy herding dog that has been used for water rescues.

Care

The Rough Collie requires more grooming than that of the Smooth variety. Rough Collies should be combed or brushed at least once a week to keep their furry coats healthy and to prevent matting. The Smooth-coated, on the other hand, just needs a brush through every once in a while to remove dead hair.

Training

The Collie is relatively easy to train breed. They demand proper training, though, with full of challenging activities. Repetitive methods of training should be avoided to keep them from getting bored. They require motivating and interesting training sessions that makes them use their pent up energy and great skill.

Character

The Collie is highly trainable and intelligent breed. They are watchful, and are willing to let their owners know of any untoward situation. Prone to bark if bored, this active breed needs to get sufficient exercise everyday to keep behavioral problems at a minimum. This affectionate breed bonds tightly with their families, but may take a while to consider strangers a friend.
