The Cocker Spaniel has a sturdy breed with compact body. One of the most popular breeds, this dog is a well-balanced cheerful pet that has great speed and endurance. They weigh between 15-30 pounds in average, with the height of 15 inches at the withers.

Coat

The coat of a Cocker Spaniel is straight, silky to touch, never wavy nor wiry, and not too profuse. They have well-feathered body, forelegs, and hind legs. They are most commonly seen in solid black, light cream, and white.

Activity

Cocker Spaniels are naturally an active dog, especially during puppyhood. As they mature, their energy slows down, but still loves to have a good brisk walk or run through a park daily. The high adaptability of this breed means they can adjust to different levels of exercise, and even though they are active, they can tolerate periods of idleness without becoming destructive and restless in their home.

The Cocker Spaniel enjoys playing, and would be the best way to exercise this lovable dog. It is important, though, to avoid encouraging this breed to jump as this may lead to joint problems as they grow. Make ...
... sure the objects you let them fetch are close to the ground, without having they jump to try and catch them.

Most often than not, the best way to keep Cocker Spaniels exercised is to include them in day-to-day activities, or get them a companion dog that can encourage play and exercise.

Temperament

A well-trained Cocker Spaniel is loyal, cheerful, playful, sweet, easily trained, and adaptable making them an excellent family pet. They require moderate amount of activity and tend to be plump if not given enough exercise. They are highly sensitive, so discipline should be done in a gentle way, or else they will wither.

Overview

The Cocker Spaniel is an intelligent, beautiful dog that makes a delightful household pet. Well suited for a home with older children, this breed should be properly socialized as puppies to avoid behavioral problems that may occur including timidity that can result to hostility and submissive urination.

Care

The Cocker Spaniel requires daily brushing. They need daily grooming if the hair has to stay long. Eyes should be kept clean to remove tear stains, and ears must be cleaned frequently to prevent ear infections.

Training

As with other breed of dogs, the Cocker Spaniel requires obedience training for them to be well-mannered. Despite their sweet nature, untrained Cocker Spaniel can be too much challenging. Although formal classes are unnecessary for this breed, they should be gently taught how to sit, stay, lie down, and come on command, with the ability to walk on a leash without resistance.

Character

The Cocker Spaniel is an intelligent and loyal breed. They require energetic owner who can be able to spend their pent up energy with them as they are active and playful dogs. This energetic breed makes a delightful household pet, and should never be left out doors for extended periods of time since their long hair cannot tolerate hot weather.
