Clumber Spaniel - Facts You Must Know Before Adopting Clumber Spaniel
The Clumber Spaniel often referred as "Gentleman's Gun Dog", this breed is the largest among all of the spaniels. Recognized as the gentlest among the aristocrats of all the dog breeds, this highly intelligent and affectionate dog is sturdy, long, and low to the ground. They typically weigh 55-85 pounds and stands 16-20 inches tall.
Coat
The Clumber Spaniel has a thick, silky coat with a dense inner coat. Their fur is soft to touch, straight, and weather-resistant. Their coat color includes pure white with orange or lemon markings that improves their location in the field when working.
Activity
The Clumber Spaniel is extremely active as puppies, but slows down as they grow. They require long walk on a daily basis. These good retrievers love playing fetch, but is should not be the only form of exercise. Long daily walks are important for this breed's health.
Temperament
One of the most easygoing and low-key hunting breeds, the Clumber Spaniel is often described as sweet, intelligent, pleasant, and docile dog. They are generally well-behaved, affectionate, and not quite active when ...
... fully-grown. They get along well with other dogs, cats, and other household pets that were raised with them. This breed is playful and can be trusted around children that belong to the family. This dog loves to please their master, so training is usually not difficult.
Overview
Despite their heavy and stubby stature, the Clumber Spaniel is a good hunter. They are believed to be a crossbreed between the Basset Hound and the now extinct, Alpine Spaniel. Their name was derived from Clumber Estate in Nottinghamshire.
Care
Coats of the Clumber Spaniel should be combed and brushed regularly with skilled trimming. Eyes and ears require regular check-up and cleaning as some of them may develop irritation of the ear. Good thing there are special lotions that can relieve this. Clipping the hair under the ears before the next general trim should be done.
Training
Contrary to the rumor, the Clumber Spaniel is not as difficult to train as they say it is. In fact, this very loyal breed has a strong willingness to please, with loving and placid temperament. This breed thrives on attention, making them very responsive to positive training techniques, a great deal of reinforcement and patience starting early on. Young puppies should be trained at once, starting from leash walking, coming when called, and stay when told. Training should always have lots of encouragement and praise when they do well.
The Clumber Spaniel should never be trained with harsh methods and/or physical or verbal abuse. The more rough trainers get the more stubborn and bull-headed they get. The Clumber Spaniels deserve a home with kindness, love and respect they were bred for.
Character
The Clumber Spaniel is affectionate, even-tempered, and docile breed. They are one of the most laid-back hunting breeds, with well-behaved and gentle personality. They get along with children, other dogs and pets, and tend to bond with one person. This breed wants to please, and has a great memory.
