Chow Chow - Facts You Must Know Before Adopting Chow Chow
The Chow Chow, often referred as Songshi Quan, with the literal meaning of "puffy-lion dog", is a sturdy dog with square-shaped profile. They are medium sized, muscular breed of dog that weighs an average of 45-70 pounds, and stands 18-22 inches at the shoulders.
Coat
The Chow Chow has two types of coat namely: the rough and the smooth, both being double coats. The difference between these two varieties is the abundance and distribution of the fur on their entire body. But, they are generally thick, dense, off-standing and straight topcoat, while the undercoat is wooly, thick, and soft to touch.
Activity
The Chow Chow can be lazy, all the more reason to be taken for a walk daily. They need at least 80 minutes of exercise a day, and will enjoy a securely fenced yard.
Temperament
Chow Chows are known to be intelligent, naturally independent, and dignified. They tend to be attached to one person only, and will snap if threatened. Bred to hunt, pull, herd, and protect, the Chow Chows make a loyal and friendly additional member of the family. This breed originated in China and is a great companion dog.
Care
The Chow Chow's long coat requires regular brushing as it is important to maintain the standing-out-look for their fur. They are seasonal heavy shedder, so extra care is required during this time. Bathing should only be done when necessary by dry shampoo.
Training
Chow Chows are generally difficult to train. It needs a great deal of diligence on the part of the trainer. It is important to establish authority at a very young age, with the human as the dominant in the relationship. Firm and consistent commands are needed for training to be successful. They do not respond to pleading, cajoling, or begging, nor are they responsive to harsh, inhumane, and heavy-handed methods. For them to accept a command, they should know that there is a basis for what they are about to perform. Although it may seem that Chow Chows are inflexible and stubborn, they are actually a breed with a strong will power.
Bred as guard dogs, the Chow Chow has a natural aggressiveness when new situation arises. So, it is important for this breed to be socialized at an early age. While they do not really carry through with hostility, socialization may help them realize that not every new circumstance requires the same reaction. Chow Chows can be affectionate and full of love just as any other breed of dog.
Character
The Chow Chow belongs to the non-sporting group with above average problem solving skills. An independent dog that is vigilant and calm, owners should beware for this breed is known to try to dominate other dogs.
