Also known as Catahoula Cur, the Catahoula Leopard Dog is traditionally bred to hunt wild boar. This active breed is known to be the most versatile among the working dogs. They can herd cattle, hunt species ranging from bear, deer, squirrel, raccoon, and boar; they are very exceptional in Search and Rescue and drug detention as well. This breed's size averages between 20-26 inches, and weight ranging from 50-90 pounds.

Coat

The Catahoula Cur is a single-coated breed with variety of colors. Their coat is short and dense, and solidly colored. Their coat color is merle combined with the solid colors, creating a pattern in patches of white and colored fur intertwined with patches of dense colors.

Activity

A working breed dog, the Catahoula Leopard Dog is highly active with workaholic personality. This breed has to be constantly sufficed with activities and exercise as they tend to become aggressive.

The Catahoula Leopard loves to work during the day, and enjoy playing and spending time outdoors rather than just sitting around. They need to run for at least an hour on a daily basis to maintain ...
... physically and mentally fit. Their extreme versatility makes this breed a great companion on a hike or a jog.

Temperament

The Catahoula Leopard Dog is strong, assertive, affectionate and playful with their owners, yet wary of strangers. They are protective and will be willing to fight to death if threatened. They are great with children, but should be supervised when around them at all times. They are even tougher than most of the other shepherd dogs as they are more aggressive with livestock, and they heel harder. Dominant and strong-willed, this breed makes great pack leaders.

Overview

The Catahoula Leopard Dog is believed to be descendants of war dogs such as Greyhound and Mastiff. Recognized as the ultimate working dog, this breed is widely known for their versatility.

Care

This single-coated breed requires minimal grooming. They need bathing couple of times a year unless absolutely necessary, and a good brushing and combing once a week. Nails should be regularly trimmed, and teeth kept clean. Prone to deafness and hip dysplasia, the Catahoula Leopard is generally a healthy breed.

Training

Training the Catahoula Leopard requires an assertive trainer to be able to control this intelligent breed. It takes a strong dog owner to take a grip on this energetic and strong-willed breed since if the owner is not able to stand up to this dominant dog, training may be problematic. Enrolling the Catahoula Leopard puppy is recommended for owners who cannot focus their time in training this breed. Although, if owners take matters to their own hands and train this dog themselves, they should do it in a firm, fair, and consistent manner.

Character

The Catahoula Leopard Dog is agile, and territorial with extreme enthusiasm and energy. They are very muscular medium to large sized breed. The distinctive characteristic of this breed is the prominent webbing of their paws, making them able to swim, and work in muddy areas.
