The Chinese Crested dog is an elegant, fine-boned toy dog that thrives on human companionship. Coming in two varieties, this breed has the Hairless and the Powder puff, born of the same litter. Weighing between 5-12 pounds and stands 9-13 inches tall, this little breed is very rare and remains to me the most popular of the hairless kind.

Coat

The Powder Puff's long and silky coat evenly covers the entire body. The Hairless type, however, has varying quantity of long silky hair on their head, ears, tail, and lower legs, with only a fine, almost unnoticeable fur on the other parts of the body.

Activity

Highly vulnerable to weight gain, the Chinese Crested dog needs to be active to avoid being lazy. They love to be taken on walks outdoors, and are good on a leash if properly socialized and becomes used to being in new places and environment.

Temperament

This affectionate small dog makes a delightful per for families that appreciate the loving nature of the Chinese Crested dog. They are frequently high strung, hurdling around in circles, and playing untiringly. Their well-adjusted attitude ...
... makes them great with children and children of all ages. This breed is not a good watchdog.

Overview

The Chinese Crested dogs are very popular breed with their great exuberance, sweetness, and loving nature. Although they have two varieties, both have similar personality - comical and intelligent.

Care

Both varieties of the Chinese Crested require particular quantity of grooming. The Powder Puff requires constant brushing to prevent matting, and although their coat doesn't grow continuously like some other breeds, it can get longer to a quite length if fully-grown.

The maintenance skin of the Hairless type is similar to that of the humans - it is prone to dryness, sunburn, and acne. Oil-free or hypoallergenic moisturizing creams keep their skin from becoming dry if applied after bathing or every other day. Burning may occur in regions that exposes them to strong UV-rays, especially with the lighter skinned kind.

Training

A rare breed with high trainability, the Chinese Crested dog is naturally clean dogs, even as puppies. They avoid messing up the house or areas where they live. Socialization and exposure to new places, people, and animals are important to keep them from being timid and frightened.

Ideal for families that want pets that can do interesting tricks, the Chinese Crested dog is known to sit up, jump over and through objects, climb ladders with relative amount of charm. But, be cautious, these dogs should not be pampered too much. They are dogs, and they need time to be just dogs. So, socialize them with other dogs, and household pets.

Character

The Chinese Crested dog is naturally a well-mannered and cheerful little dog. They rarely bark and nip, although they can be wary of strangers. This breed makes a great dog companion, and never fails to cheer you up. They do well in obedience courses, and are very eager to please their owners.
