Best men are like boxes of chocolates. They come in all sizes and packages. The best man can be the brother or the friend of the groom. He may be the son or even the father of the groom. In fact the best man may be a woman and be instead the best buddy of the groom. All of these variations mean that the speeches they give will vary. A brother, for instance will be able to tell stories of what the groom was like at home as a child. His best friend, on the other hand, will certainly know things about him that perhaps the bride had better not hear.

In that reply he should insist that they are the gilding on the wedding photographs and that he is extremely lucky that his duties mean he has to dance with every single one of them.
