Damask is a type of textile that is constructed from silk. It is most commonly used in the manufacturing of drapes, tablecloths, wall paper, and upholstery. It is also commonly used to manufacture durable, outer garments, such as coats and jackets. The term damask may also refer to a style of textile weaving; however, this style of weaving does not take into account the type of material used in its construction. The identifying characteristic of damask is a background of luxurious fabric against raised embroidery or design. It is not uncommon to find damask as the upholstery of antique furniture. Damask is available in a wide variety of patterns and colors.

Due to its luxurious qualities, the fabric tends to be rather expensive, and it is viewed as a luxury item. Damask that is constructed of pure silk tends to be the most expensive due to the amount of silk that is involved in its construction. As a raw material, silk is rather expensive. Numerous manufacturers offer discounts on silk damask, or other forms of damask, if it is purchased in bulk. Purchasing damask in bulk is usually done when the damask is to be used ...
... in a large scale project, such as interior decorating. Additionally, purchasing damask in bulk ensures that the customer receives fabric that is uniform in its color and weaving pattern.

The themes and patterns that are incorporated into damask usually consist of geometric patterns or botanical themes. However, it is not uncommon for a patter to incorporate images of animals or simple domestic scenes. Damask originated in the Orient, and Marco Polo first introduced it into Western society. Its name is derived from Damascus, in the Middle East, which became a major manufacturing and trading center in the 1500's and 1600's. Damask is popular among consumers because it provides an individual with a feeling of luxury and pampering. Furthermore, the manner in which damask is woven ensures that the cloth is rather durable. Synthetic damask is the most durable form of damask; however, its texture is not quite the same as damask that is constructed from organic materials.

In the early 1900's, the invention of the Jacquard loom made the manufacturing of damask must less expensive, and the fabric became more financially accessible for the general public. In modern society, damask decorating ideas is created from a modern form of the Jacquard loom through the use of computer controls to manipulate the position of warp threads in the fabric.
