Boston Terrier - Facts You Must Know Before Adapting Boston Terrier
Do you think you're ready to train your new puppy? Here you will find the useful dog training tips that will certainly make the best out of your new puppy.
The Boston Terrier is known as the American Gentlemen, as their markings oftentimes resemble a tuxedo. They are short-headed, compact, well-balanced breed that weighs an average of 10-25 pounds and average height of 15-17 inches.
Coat
Boston Terriers have short, fine coat that doesn't shed that much. They are usually black and white, brindle and white, brown and white, or for some, red and white. The white covers the belly, the chest, around the neck, and down to the middle of the face, through the nose. They can also have white paws.
Activity
A long walk daily with sessions of free off-leash play in a securely fenced yard is all that the Boston Terrier needs to stay happy. Somewhat inactive indoors, they could do well without a yard. This terrier is sensitive to extreme weather.
Temperament
The Boston Terrier has a friendly predisposition. They can vary in temperaments from those eager to please their masters to those ...
... that are stubborn. Both can easily be trained though, provided that the owner is patient and assertive. Originally bred to fight, this breed were later on bred for companionship. Today, this terrier is alert, expressive, gentle, and well-mannered.
Overview
As the name implies, the Boston Terrier originated in Boston, Massachusetts. Initially weighing 44 pounds, this breed was bred down from bull and terrier pit-fighting types.
Care
The short-haired Boston Terrier is relatively easy to groom. A good brush with a firm-bristled brush is needed. Bathing should be done only when necessary. Dab the face with a damp cloth to clean the prominent eyes should be done daily. Constantly check the eyes and the ears for grass seeds and ticks. Clipping the nails should be done from time to time.
Training
Boston Terriers are easy to train. They are willing to please, passionate learners, and quick-witted. They are quite slow when it comes to house breaking, though. But they keep up faster than many other breeds. They are highly sensitive to the tone of one's voice, so speaking harshly to this breed will frustrate them. They require proper socialization at an early age since males can sometimes be territorial. Small treats and praising are great for this breed as they are more responsive to positive reinforcement than discipline.
A happy Boston Terrier is ready to learn and eager to please. Be consistent and take a minimum of a few minutes to train this dog every day. Never stretch training period for too long or else they will get bored. Mixing it up and working on one command for a few minutes, then going to another on the next is highly recommended. Owners should always keep in mind to make it fun, and that this terrier wants to please them. Turning training into a fun game that you both enjoy is advised so that neither of you will get bored.
Character
Boston Terriers are small, compact, sturdy, but not at all delicate or fragile. This breed is kind and gentle-natured. The high-spirited, playful, and active type of dogs, they are a wonderful combination of balance, strength gracefulness and determination.
