Work At A Student City
In the past there were a number of reasons that resulted in the growth of the town's population or even its founding. One of such reasons were the universities. Especially in Europe, numerous towns were founded or became much larger because of a university that was founded there. For example a small Dutch town Groningen with a population of 188.000 people has 50.000 students living in it. A serious number especially for such a small town! A university in a city really fuels the town with young energy and can turn a small rural town into a brewing community within few years! Also a city which is centered around a university (like the mentioned Groningen) has a lot of opportunities for people, especially young people who are looking for jobs.
Probably one of the most common student jobs is waiter. There is nothing bad about it, all people eat and therefore this business will be there for a very long time. In case you plan to take such a job make sure that you are familiar with the main principles of waiter work - attitude, knowledge and improvisation.
First of all the waiter needs to have a good attitude (which ...
... is always reflected in the tip). Be positive keep smiling, make sure that you look good and the client will be satisfied! The looks are highly important, so care about your uniform and don't let an occasional food spot have an effect on your tip. In addition to this learn to do everything before the client asks. This leaves a very good impression!
Second is to know the menu. Often people don't know what they want or just want something new, or just want to know what they are eating, so in this case advising something will be the only solution. Therefore a perfect knowledge of the menu will help!
Finally learn to improvise. This is not the toughest job, but there might be difficult situations and only fast thinking will help you solving it (or passing it to the manager). Be creative and you will be rewarded by a good tip.
A nice bonus for waiter work that includes communicating with people will be to know the history of the city. For example Groningen has a lot of awesome architecture and few serious battles behind its back. So there always will be something to tell!
But like in many other cases the students at such cities are both a blessing and a curse for people looking for work. The presence of a large number of students creates requires additional facilities that provide food and some other basic things. But on the other hand the students also take a lot of working places especially during seasoned work. Nevertheless a city filled with students always has more opportunities than a city without students. As you see a student city bears a lot of opportunities for young and socially active people, so if you a looking for city with jobs - check out the student cities first.
