The flashlight was first created in January of 1899. The American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Company created a handful of flashlights and distributed them to New York City police officers. The early design consisted of inefficient carbon-filament bulbs as well as zinc-carbon batteries. The light needed frequent rest periods to function well. These rest periods occurred within short periods of time which resulted in the lights only able to be used in flashes, hence the name flashlight. However, the United States and Canada are the only two countries to use the term flashlight. Outside of North America, these are called torches.

Flashlights are usually considered to be used for power outages or camping excursions. Although these are two places where flashlights are used, this list is not exclusive. Flashlights have wide various uses. Miners often use flashlights attached to their hats in order to mine carefully and successfully. Many doctors and dentists use similar devices to see patients more clearly, but are also mounted on head gear in lieu of a hard hat.

Construction workers typically use flashlights ...
... during construction because many times the power is turned off. This is to protect workers from electrocution. A flashlight helps these workers to see and perform work safely. Police officers often use flashlights to investigate crime scenes and search for suspects when they run into dark abandoned areas.

Flashlights are not only used for types of employment, but can also be used for hobbies and recreation. Rock climbers and scuba divers all have a need for flashlights. Jewelry makers may also need to illuminate the pieces of beads and glass.

A flashlight comes in various designs with different types of light as well. One type of light used is an incandescent light. This glass bulb uses a tungsten filament which emits radiant energy in a spectrum related to temperature. The bulbs are vacuumed or filled with argon, krypton, or xenon.

Other flashlights use light emitting diodes or LEDs. These have become highly popular because they use less battery power than others. The LED flashlight uses unconventional bulbs to provide illumination. These flashlights typically produce white, red, blue, and infrared light.

A flashlight comes in many designs; some are compact and others are not. A pen light is one type of compact flashlight and is useful for shining light onto small areas. Tactical lights are mounted on rifles or guns to give light on a subject.

Flashlights have come a long way since their inception in 1899 and many companies sell various types of flashlights to meet the needs of different people.
