Elderly patients are sometimes referred to a hospice center at the end of their lives in order to help with the transition to death. Most of these patients have already been in home hospice and are just moved to a hospice center to continue receiving additional care. There can be various reasons for hospice that include terminal illness and injury. For example, most cancer patients are in hospice care in the final stages of their lives. Moreover, hospice center is a lifesaver for most patients and their families as they can't afford the care costs that are associated with a long illness. In particular, home health care is very costly and hospital stays are even more expensive. Hospice offers medical equipment like beds, walkers, wheel chairs and ventilators. Medications and doctor visits are also free once an individual qualifies for Hospice.

Note, hospice provides much more than just medical care to the patient. In fact, they have trained and experienced counselors that help the families of ill patients. Their ...
... aim is to counsel everyone who is involved to make the situation as painless as possible. Often family members will get visits at home from nurses and counselors. The counselors talk with the entire family together or individually. It is one of the great ways to get everything out in the open with each other and express concerns or fears.

Hospice offers various stages of care to the patients. The speed of patient's progress through these stages is also different. Most of the health centers use a color coded systems for identifying the teams. While, others use numbers in order to depict the level of care required.

In the beginning stages, minimal care and visits are required. For instance, the patient is provided with equipment. Also, information is provided to the patient's family. The philosophy of the hospice is to focus on the suffering of the patient and not on the cure of the disease that was often beyond help. The physical and mental anguish of the person is the main concern. Equally important is the family's care; so that they may cope with the patient's illness.
