Because Rio de Janeiro, Brazil has a wonderful climate throughout the entire year, many of the activities there are focused on the ocean and the wonderful beaches the city has to offer. The most popular water-related activities are kite surfing, bodyboarding and surfing. On the beach, people play beach football, volleyball and a combination between these two called fute volei (basically it is volleyball using football rules).

Going off the beach tourists can choose from one of the many fitness centers spread through the entire city. The largest and most popular franchise in the city is Body Tech, which has several locations in Leblon, Copacabana, Ipanema and Barra da Tijuca. If you are looking for some sort of outdoor activity, you could go climbing and hiking in Rio. We strongly recommend that you don't pass the opportunity to visit the Tijuca National Forest as it offers various good trails for medium to difficult hikes. Another important landmark in Rio is the Lagoa, a lake located right in the middle of the city and Zona Sul. Around this lake there are a bundle of generous sidewalks where tourists can bike, run or ...
... simply walk.

If you are into hiking, make sure you climb up Pedra da Gavea which is another of Rio's many landmarks. Around the city you will also find a few good mountains if you want to go rope climbing - the famous mountains of Corcovado and Sugar Loaf. We strongly advise you to go with a local guide as he will know what the best routes to go by are. The jumping off point for those of you interested in hang gliding is at Sao Conrado, surrounded by the exquisite Tijuca National Park and other interesting landmarks that are worth visiting. These flights will offer you stunning views of the mountains and the wonderful beaches of Rio de Janeiro. You should know that in the city there are a couple of local companies that will offer tandem flights (including transportation to/from your hotel).

If you did not know, Rio de Janeiro is slowly but surely becoming famous for its golf courses. If you want to relax by golfing, go to the Gavea Golf Club. Other alternatives would be in Angra dos Reis, Buzios and Teresopolis. All of them offer public courses but the downside is that they are 2 ½ hours away from Rio.

Of course the most important sport in Rio de Janeiro is football and the city has a lot to offer to its fans. If you plan to go to Rio, don't forget to visit the famous Maracana stadium that was the start of the 1950 World Cup and is popular for holding events with more than 200,000 fans gathered. The most popular clubs in the country are Fluminese, Botafogo, Vasco and of course, Flamengo. The first division of the Brazilian league is played all year round, except December and the first half of January.

All things considered, there are a lot to do in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - starting with football, golf, hiking, biking, climbing and various other sports that relax us and make us stay in good physical shape.
