Eye examination involves a series of procedures designed to evaluate eye performance, as well as detect signs of eye-related illnesses. Tests include assessment of vision and ability to focus as well as checking for any symptoms of disorders. Eye examination helps in preventing problems before it is too late.

Basic eye examinations include inspection of the visible parts of the eye, such as the eyelids, surrounding tissues, and the sclera. A patient may be asked to look upwards in order to examine the sclera and conjunctiva, and the cornea, iris, and pupil are also inspected, usually with the aid of a small flashlight.

In order to check visual acuity (the ability of an eye to see details from a distance), experts use a Snellen chart, a chart that contains certain letters of different sizes. A patient is then asked to read the letters from varying distances. Using this method, a doctor can determine how far a person can see details on an object. Normal eyesight is 20/20, meaning a person can see from 20 feet the details that can normally be seen from 20 feet. In comparison, a 20/200 eyesight means a person ...
... can only see from 20 feet details that can normally be seen from 200 feet.

When conducting an eye exam, Indianapolis eye doctors can also use a flashlight in order to observe how well a patient's iris contracts and expands to compensate for changing light conditions. This method is used to detect abnormalities in the pupils, such as failure to contract properly when exposed to light, or pupil movement that is accompanied by drooping of the eyelid.

By asking patients to follow one's finger during an eye exam, Indianapolis eye doctors can also determine the ability of a patient to move his or her eyes. If a person has trouble keeping up with the movement of the finger, it may indicate a weakness in some muscles responsible for eye movement.

There are other procedures involved in performing special eye tests, but they are only when the doctor suspects a certain eye disorder. Some of them require special equipment to help determine specific eye conditions. With the help of regular eye exams, Indianapolis eye doctors will be able to determine the necessary treatment procedures.
