1967 Season In The Nhl

The 1967 season of the NHL featured a whole new look. The NHL had been playing with the Original Six up until this point, but they were now ready to expand. The original six teams would be joined by 6 more franchises. This would double the amount of teams that played in the league.
These 12 teams would play 74 games each. This addition of new teams would greatly change the dynamics of the league. Previously these teams would play each other so many times that they would become extremely familiar with their opponents. With twice as many teams they would only have half of the exposure to their opponents and there would be much more room for surprise by the time that the playoffs would come around.
The league was broken up into two divisions, the East and West Divisions. The East Division was by far the dominant division of these two divisions during the season. They had all but one team end with a winning percentage over .500. Meanwhile the West Division had zero teams that managed a winning percentage of .500.
The East Division would be owned by the Montreal Canadiens in this season. The Canadiens put ...
... together a stellar record of 42-22-10 on the season. Their success was greatly aided by their stellar defense. Their defense allowed just 167 goals on the season. This was the lowest total of any team in the NFL.
The second best team in the East Division was the New York Rangers. The Rangers managed a 39-23-12 record on the season. The Boston Bruins managed a solid record as well, winning 37 games while only losing 27. They would also tie 10 more games. The Black Hawks, Maple Leafs and Red Wings all had solid seasons as well. They would finish with records of 32-26-16, 33-31-10 and 27-35-12.
The West Division was the weaker division, but the Philadelphia Flyers would lead the way. They would be joined in the division by the Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, Minnesota North Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins and Oakland Seals.
The Flyers would finish with a record of 31-32-11 on the season. They would lead the division despite being outscored by their opponents on the season. The fact is that every team in the West Division allowed more goals than they scored on the season. In contrast, there were 4 teams in the East Division that outscored their opponents on the season.
The Kings would finish in 2nd place with a 31-33-10 record. The Blues finished with a 27-31-16 record to take 3rd place in the division. The last team to make the playoffs in the division would be the Minnesota North Stars. They finished with a 27-32-15 record.
The two bottom teams in the league would be the Penguins and Seals. They would finish with records of 27-34-14 and 15-42-17.
The Montreal Canadiens and the St. Louis Blues would work their way through the playoffs to the Stanley Cup Finals. Just like the East Division dominated the regular season they managed to dominate in the Finals over the West. The Canadiens would win in a 4-0 sweep.
