Visual Merchandising: Essential Tips

With competition increasing in each and every field, art forms like visual merchandising are becoming more and more relevant. Visual merchandising is a way of making the arrangement of goods aesthetically appealing to the eyes. Simply put, it is the way a store arranges its goods so that it attracts the attention of the customers. A retailer can use all his creativity and innovative ideas for displaying the goods in an interesting fashion. A retailer needs to improvise continuously and should also have an inclination for keeping up with the current fashion trends and concepts.
There are some important components of visual merchandising which you need to keep in mind as a retailer. Although the success largely depends on how creatively talented you are, taking note of some useful basic advice does help a great deal.
The Merchandize is the King
Always remember that your merchandize should be the focal point of your decorative ideas. The very concept of visual merchandising is to enhance the visibility of the product on display. Therefore, your ideas should compliment the products in question. In no way should ...
... they overshadow your offerings. A customer would hardly be spending three to five minutes on a display window. Therefore, you need to have something truly special for him to remain glued to it for a longer time span. But, there is no point if the visual merchandising ideas attract him more than the products on offer. They would just remember the decoration and forget about the actual stuff. Therefore, the ideas and the products need to complement each other.
Keep it Clean
A clean and uncluttered arrangement will definitely register easily in the minds of the customers. Cleanliness automatically enhances visibility.
Keep the Strategies in Mind
The display ideas should be in sync with the other advertising strategies adopted by the store. This helps the customers to correlate the brand with the products on display. For example, if your store has a logo, make it a point to use the same colors used in the logo for the display also. The more the ideas gel together, the better.
Colors Speak a Thousand Words
Use colors judiciously. Colors are often associated with certain distinct emotions and events. An inappropriate choice of color could put off the customer or disassociate him from the concept you want to portray. Therefore, if it's a Valentine display, the customers would relate to the color red more than anything else. Similarly, the color black must be used extensively with a Halloween theme. A display for baby care products should be using soft pinks and blues.
Change is Good
Keep changing your displays at regular intervals. Customers like to see new things quite often. The same pattern might just cease to interest them after some time. But, changes should not happen too often either. You must have a period fixed for each display pattern. For example, a Valentine display should not remain for too long after Valentines Day has gone past. It gives a kind of stale impression for the display. It's great to create fresh ones as per the events, the seasons, and the special days on the calendar.
