The kitchen - perhaps because of the necessity of heat and fire in this part of the home, it is the spot often referred to as the origin of fire incidents. While there's really no such thing as a fireproof kitchen, yours can be a safer one by following these guidelines.

Attendance is a must

Most fire damage in kitchen happen because of absent cooks. As much as possible, avoid going out of the kitchen when you have something on an open stove. If you need to go out, ask someone to look out while you're gone or simply turn off the heat. If you cook long hours and you easily get bored, install a television in the kitchen or bring a gadget to keep you entertained. However, the rule should be set clear - always keep an eye on what you are cooking.

Cleanliness and orderliness

Accumulated fat, grease, oil and food crumbs in and around your cooking device should be cleaned before turning it on as these can easily catch fire. If you forgot to clean your stove or grill and a small fire occurred, sprinkle some baking soda and turn off the stove and gas. Also, towels and pot holders may catch flame if ...
... these are placed near the stove. Keeping your kitchen tidy and organized does not only guarantee healthy and sumptuous meals but also a safe kitchen and home.

Electrical fires

Fire damage in kitchen can start from the stove or from electrical appliances. For electrical appliances, make sure that you use only those that are tested for quality and purchased from a reputable seller or manufacturer. Do not plug too many appliances in one socket or risk overloading the outlet.

Equip yourself

There are many fireproof and fire-resistant kitchen gadgets available now, from basins to aprons to just about every kitchen knickknack. If you have difficulty finding such items or the prices are too steep, at least consider having a fire blanket or fire extinguisher. Learn how to actually use these equipment because surely you would not have time to read instructions should actual fire happen.
