Profile Platform Scale
Platform scales might look like simple scales, but they are actually highly sophisticated devices. While it is true that they are basically comprised of two parts, the platform itself, and the display, there is actually quite a bit of technology that goes into the separate pieces. This is because the way platform scales are used require them to be precise, as they are most practical for industrial or manufacturing environments. This means that the essential product of a business is at stake. If you sell chemicals by weight or supply beef to groceries all over the country, you need to have an accurate scale to weigh your metal drum containers or livestock.
The Platform:
The ‘platform’ of a platform scale has to incorporate sensors that can detect and accurately weigh many different types of items. This can get tricky, as in the case of constantly moving animals. Analog or purely mechanical technology would be inefficient for this type of context, because it reads weight by the straightforward force of pressure being applied to the measuring surface. This will provide an inaccurate reading ...
... if the animal being weighed is stomping all over the equipment. You can imagine that farmers (and others) have to compensate for this. That’s why they rely on digital platform scales with very sensitive load cells strategically placed in the corners of the platform. That way, an accurate reading of a moving load can be generated. The platform has to be rugged enough to both protect the sensor technology and withstand the heavy loads that need to be weighed. Therefore it should be made of rugged material, such as aluminum or steel. In additional, having the frame be of a welded construction, i.e., welded all into one piece, makes it even more durable. Since there are no movable or removable parts, that makes it hardy enough to take constant beating.
The profile of many platform scales is important too. It cannot be too high; otherwise it will be very cumbersome for those who have to haul heavy products on and off the scale. If your product is a herd of cattle, then you have to get each one to ‘step up’ onto the platform. This could end up taking a lot of time and effort. Avoid this by making sure the platform itself is less than three inches. Some manufacturers like ArlynScales even make them less than two inches. Additionally, some come with ramps on either side, so you don’t have to prod your livestock onto it, or, so you can just easily wheel your product onto the ramp.
The Display:
By far the most sophisticated part of a platform scale is the display. You might think it is just a digital read out of the products’ weight, but is far more than that. Platform scale displays can be integrated remotely with your business computer. That means it can weigh items, separate them into batches, remotely transmit the data right into an Access file or Excel spreadsheet, and send the said file to a printer. This makes keeping track of your product much easier and more efficient. You can even install protocols that would send results from up to ten scales to one computer, batching the results for you as you go along. Therefore, having a sophisticated platform scale at your business will actually do much more than just weigh your products for you.
Those are many steps that could be taken care of for youâ€all by your platform scale. For more information, contact ArlynScales.com
* J-hook with a safety catch, rigged to pivot and revolve with the load. The J-hook should be rated for 4 times its maximum load capacity before it starts to deform.
* calibration that can be easily performed by the user
* data hold function to "freeze" the weight readings so it can be recorded
* USB connection and printer connection. Some more sophisticated scales will include software for interface with a PC or laptop
* Tare settings that can be reset by a pushbutton
With a welded steel shackle ring and J-hook to hold the load, crane scales or hanging scales are common for warehouse, scientific, educational or commercial applications. Rather than the mechanical dial and face of the familiar butchers scale, high-capacity hanging scales might have a large LED display, making them easy to read from a distance. They might also have completely wireless remote control for operating all weighing functions. Many come equipped with a J-hook that can pivot and revolve, and a heavy-duty safety catch across the opening of the hook itself. And as with many modern industrial scales, some hanging scales have a USB interface to input information directly to a computer (sometimes with their own software and with a printer interface as well). A good quality scale should also account for damping vibrations and averaging in cases of a wobbly or unstable load.
