Throughout your life, your skin takes a beating. As adults, many of us fret over deep scar removal. Whether from a traumatic accident and injury, surgery, skin condition or just from the bumps and scrapes of growing up, scars arise as an almost inevitable stamp of adulthood.

What are scars and how do they form? Scars form naturally, from the body’s biological way of closing and healing wounds. After the deep, thick dermis is damaged, the body attempts to repair it by building new collagen tissue and fibers. This process varies based on the type of wound that is healing, as well as on the individual.

In youths and people with darker skin tones, collagen production tends to be increased. For this reason, hypertrophic, or keloid scars, are common. The appearance of these scars is raised, not deep or sunken into the skin. ...
... The majority of scars are relatively even with the surface of the skin and slightly lighter than the complexion. When tissue and fat under the dermis are damaged the result is scars that tend to dip below the surface of the skin, which is usually associated with major surgeries and bad cases of acne. This is because the collagen production isn’t great enough to fill the gap created by the wound.

During pregnancy or periods of abnormal growth, scars can appear as stretched skin, commonly called stretch marks. These scars appear as skin that is pulled too tightly and aren’t unusually deep, but do lay slightly lower than the skin’s surface.

To achieve deep scar removal, the use of creams may not be enough. Of course, lotions and ointments intended to restore skin’s appearance and encourage cell growth can’t hurt. However, you may want to think of more focused, intensive treatments to reduce the appearance of deeper scars.
Surgical scar removal

Surgeries for scar removal are not uncommon. For raised scars, surgery isn’t recommended; however, it can create an even higher, more visible scar. For tattoos and tattoo scarring, surgery is an option.
Steroids

For hypertrophic scars, a longer schedule of steroid injections may help lower the height and flatten out its appearance. Steroid injections are not the best option for treating stretched scars or deep set scars.
Dermabrasion and resurfacing

Skin resurfacing and microdermabrasion are excellent treatment options for shallower scars and scars resulting from acne. Dermabrasion is performed by removing the top layer of skin. It’s likely that it won’t completely eliminate a scar, but it can make them shallower, more evenly toned and less visible.

The best way to approach a deeper scar is with a long-term, diligent treatment plan. Using a combination of silicone patches, topical creams, dermabrasion, and even punch treatments if the scar is deep enough, may help. Accept that deep scar removal is one of the most difficult types of scar removal because the scar will most likely always be present. By treating your scar consistently, for a long period of time, you can minimize its appearance.
