During its tenure it had different engines at different times all made by General Motors, the car itself having been made by the Pontiac division of the General Motors. In 1969 a special ‘Trans Am Performance and Appearance Package' was added which inter alia also had a high performance engine. In 1976 at the 50th anniversary of Pontiac, a special edition of Trans Am was released. From time to time modifications in its appearance and styling were also made. When faced with the fuel crisis changes were made to improve fuel efficiency, aerodynamics, and handling. At the twentieth anniversary of Trans Am in 1989 Turbo Trans Am was marketed which was one of the cars having highest top speed amongst American cars.
