Employment - Temporary Employment Agency
One of the quickest means to find a temporary or temp job is through a temporary employment office. These are organizations that sustain a register of candidates in need of part time employment. Employers will get in touch with them and request an employee that has a particular skill set for a specific period of time. They will then pair their applicants with the employer's requirements. The matches are made by applicant interviews conducted by HR persons with the temporary employment agency. Anyone can apply to an agency, intake is dependent upon the interview and subsequent skills test. Be ready to spend an one and a half hours at the agency.
When you arrive at a temporary employment office, you will need to fill out a general form. These can be lengthy and very thorough, even going as far as to ask you what type of attire you prefer to wear to work (the rationale for this being that the agency wouldn't want to place an employee with a wardrobe of informal and business casual clothing in an office with strict formal business attire requirements). Other questions on the form may be related to, your education, past ...
... employment, interests, hobbies, type of leadership skills you possess etc and it will take an applicant anywhere from 10 - 25 minutes to complete. Althought a recruiter reviews your form, you will be allotted 20 - 30 minutes to complete a computer skills test that will measure your skills using Microsoft Office programmes (usually word and excel) as well as a test of your typing speed and accuracy.
The interview phase is next where the HR person will go over the results of your skills test and ask a few more general interview questions. You may be asked:
1. Tell me something about yourself.
2. How do you handle stressful situations?
3. How do you deal with criticism?
4. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
5. Do you prefer to work on your own or in a team?
6. Why are you interested in working for this company?
7. Why do you want to work as a temp?
It is always a good practice to have some questions ready for the interviewer. Some suggestions are:
1. Who are some of your clients?
2. What industries do your applicants work in?
3. Do you specialize in any particular business?
4. Where are most of your clients?
5. Who is responsible for assigning me jobs?
6. What pay rate can I expect for my skills?
Working as a temp through different employment agencies is great experience for individuals who want to work in HR departments and management. It will prepare you for both sides of the application process as you will know what an employer is looking for. To find employment in Human Resources , an educational background in might contain management principles, organizational structure, psychology, administration. Information technology and even political science and statistics will prove useful.
