Smoke damage is a serious problem in New Jersey and as a matter of fact, everywhere else where fire occurs - pretty much all over the world. While it is a little less noticeable than other manifestations of fire damage, it is still alarming especially if you are concerned with the quality of air your family is breathing and you are dealing with an expensive fabric or a favorite piece of clothing. Fire damage is can be very difficult to manage since you will not only face the usual fire and smoke damage, but also water damage.

With such concerns on fire, local governments do their best to implement laws that would minimize fire damage, if they cannot totally eliminate the instances of fire. In New Jersey, a law requiring new homes to install fire sprinklers is much debated. This is the 2009 International Residential Code (IRC) which is fully supported by fire safety officials and members, as well as the National Fire Protection Agency and US Fire Administration. While fire sprinklers are required in buildings and other establishments, it is not a requirement in one and two-family residences in New Jersey.

Even ...
... the newly-elected governor faced both criticisms and praises with his move to reconsider the ordinance that otherwise would have been enacted earlier. Many groups and individuals favor the said code for safety purposes. Their argument is that if builders and homeowners can spend money on pricey flooring and countertops, they should be able to spend on sprin
klers.
Some residents and home builders do not share the same sentiments however. To them, fire sprinklers can do more harm than good because it is prone to false alarms. When these happen, not only gallons of water are wasted but properties can also get damaged by water and moisture. They recommend using smoke detectors instead of fire sprinklers to battle fire and smoke damage in New Jersey.

While the debate continues and the IRC is still being reviewed, home builders are encouraged to promote designs and use materials that can avoid and withstand fire. Residents are reminded to stay on the safe side and be alert when fires happen.
