What Is The Difference In An Ipod And An Mp3 Player?
One of the most common question surrounding personal music players today is “what is the difference between an iPod and an MP3 player?†The truth is, none. An iPod is simply a type of MP3 player, like a Sony Walkman.
So What is an MP3 Player?
An MP3 Player is a device that plays MP3 files, which are generally music files. This technology replaced CDs, and the need to carry huge folders with countless discs inside. Now, people could access thousands of songs and albums with the touch of a button, and hear them played back in high quality digital sound. The devices are often much smaller than their predecessors †the personal CD player †some weighing less than an ounce. The introduction of the MP3 player brought a whole new world of portability to the music world. Now, people had earphones coming out of their pockets and were listening to music constantly.
How is an iPod Different?
The iPod was introduced by Apple in 2001. There’s a huge variety of iPods available ranging from the super small iPod Shuffle that holds a few hundred ...
... songs, to the super functional iPod Touch.
* The Shuffle is a basic MP3 player. It’s small and can clip to your sleeve for maximum portability. It also comes in a variety of colors like pink, orange, blue, green and silver.
* The iPod Classic is a bit larger, offers a color screen and can play videos as well as MP3 files. It also has a much larger memory, and therefore can hold more files than the Shuffle.
* The iPod Nano is sort of in between the Classic and the Shuffle. It’s small and colorful, like the Shuffle, but has a screen and will play videos, like the Classic.
* The iPod Touch is Apple’s most advanced MP3 player and features a touch screen. Slightly larger than a credit card, this MP3 player also offers Wi-Fi connectivity, and gaming capabilities. The games range from regular car games, to interactive racing games that involve tilting the device to steer and maneuver. It also has a fairly large memory and even the basic iPod Touch can handle a tremendous amount of files.
Apple’s iPods are also the only MP3 players to exclusively use iTunes software to sync themselves to your computer. Other MP3 devices don’t generally require an interface program, while Apple has created an entire marketplace that services their products. From iTunes you can organize your songs, add album artwork and expand your library by purchasing more songs. The one drawback to iTunes is, while it’s available to everyone to purchase music from, only those with Apple’s merchandise will be able to take their music on the go, as iTunes music is not supported on any other MP3 player.
