Your friends' personal help desk
Do your friends call you when they've got problems that they could easily handle themselves? If you're the one people around you turn to when they need something because they know you can tell them what they should do? How about you sit down and make money while doing exactly that: talk people through problems and answer their questions! All big companies use call centers to offer customer service or to sell service (or products). If you can handle your friends, surely you can handle random strangers.

Offer the service you'd like to receive
If you've got an energetic and friendly, positive attitude, you're bound to spread this on others. We've all experienced bad customer service at one point in out lives. Especially over the phone. But how about the times you actually got what you needed? It's so common to get frustrated by terrible customer service that you hang up with a smile once you get good service. This should be a motivation to deliver just that.

Good listening skills
If you've got experience with friends, you've got some active listening skills. Practice ...
... them! You don't want to interrupt customers (you don't want to be interrupted yourself, do you?) and make sure you get what they're actually asking. Most of the time the actual question follows a long, somewhat vague explanation. Understand what people ask you. There may be scripts to read from, but don't make yourself sound like a robot.

Multi-tasking, you can do it!
For a job in a call center you need to be able to do several things at once. For example listening and writing down details. Sounds hard? You can do it man, it's not like you choke when you watch TV, and set up the DVR to tape something while you are eating or on the phone. Right? Be honest here, you can multi-task like there's no tomorrow! You need to be able to think fast and ahead while you are listening, and be creative in solving customer problems. Make sure you've got experience with basic programs such as Windows, Word, and be able to enter data quickly. Most call centers record their calls, but this is of no use while you're in that actual conversation.

Additional perks
Don't you love your comfy pants and relaxed fit shirt? Well, there's no uniform or work outfit at a call center. No ties or suits, just whatever you want to wear. Works hours can differ, as call centers are usually open 24/7, all year long. This makes it easy to select some time off.

Breathe in, let it go
A job in a call center can be highly stressful, as you're bound to head for an intense environment where it's important to always be a smooth operator. You might want to practice some deep breathing techniques and learn a couple of simple exercises that you can complete right at your desk when things get hectic. Just breathe in, keep cool and don't forget to keep on smiling. Remember that if you treat people with the respect they deserve (the respect you'd like to get as well, right?), you should receive the same in return.

Date night?
Make sure you've got a comb with you at all times. If you've got plans after work (a date or something unexpected) you don't want to go out in public with so called headphone hair!

Whether you like them or not, call centers are out there. And they're not as scary as you think! Make some bucks and check out these call center job offers or callcenter vacatures!
