Preview Of The Motorola Defy

The Motorola Defy is one of the first rugged smartphones we've seen, its rubberised casing and Gorilla Glass protected display making the handset immune to dust, scratches and even water. Motorola claim the handset can spend 10 minutes in water up to 10m deep, its headphone and USB ports even protected by rubber stoppers.
The handset comes complete with a 3.7 inch capacitive touchscreen, which means despite its extra durability, it still provides all the features you would expect from a smartphone. As the large display comes to the edges of the screen, it still looks like a high-end smartphone, despite its rubber chassis. No physical keypad is provided, as you are equipped with an on-screen keypad, which makes it equally as fast to send messages.
The Motorola Defy packs a speedy 800MHz processor, and comes equipped with Android 2.1. An update to 2.1 (Froyo) will be available, although Éclair provides you with plenty of features, including integrated Google apps such as Search, Goggles and Maps. The handset also comes with MOTOBLUR, which allows for Motorola's customer user interface to be displayed on the ...
... homescreen, complete with live re-sizeable widgets and a stream of updates from all your favourite social networking websites. You can pick certain contacts to appear in the live stream, so it doesn't get cluttered, alongside RSS feeds. MOTOBLUR also allows you to remotely access your phone's information online, and backs up your data.
A 5 megapixel camera is also provided, complete with LED flash, image stabilization and geotagging. Considering its water resistance, it may even be capable of taking good quality photos under water. A video player is also included, and footage can be viewed back on the handsets large display. Its built in media player will also keep you entertained, as not only can you play your own music, you can stream music and videos straight from the web. With 2GB of internal memory which can be expanded up to 32GB using a memory card, you are provided with plenty of storage for all of your files.
The Motorola Defy also comes complete with CrystalTalk Plus, a new feature which uses dual microphones to amplify your voice alongside noise cancellation technology, to make talking on the phone clearer.
Android WebKit browser comes pre-installed, and browsing the web is quick and easy using its 3G and WiFi connectivity.
The Defy has an expected release date of October 2011, although no official pricing has been mentioned.
